Reel To Reel Tapes

For the very best sound, nothing really beats reel to reel tape. This is the format that was used in most recording studios for years - and therefore most classic albums were recorded on tape. We only sell professionally made reel to reel tapes from official labels like Analogue Productions, who create officially licenced releases of albums that are professionally made - often at 15ips with CCIR equalisation and are beautifully packaged. Please ensure you have a reel to reel machine capable of playing at 15ips and CCIR (most basic machines are NAB only) - we recommend for example a well serviced Studer A810, Otari MX-5050, Sony TC880-2, Revox B77 MkIII (only this latest model plays CCIR at 15ips), etc.
Why reel to reel tape - aren't cassette tapes low-fi? Reel to reel and cassette tapes are very much distinct. While cassette tapes can sound fantastic on the right equipment (e.g. a Nakamichi Dragon recording on type IV Metal tapes), cassette tapes only run at 1 and 7/8 ips (inches per second) and is only 1/8" thick.
In contrast, reel reel in this context is a professional format and most audiophile reel to reel releases run at 15 ips and are 1/4" thick. Much like how a 45rpm vinyl release of a particular album is usually preferred over the 33rpm release, running at greater speed provides more tape material per second - this and the thickness of the tape allows for far better quality.
With the continual growth in vinyl sales, many listeners have been trying to enjoy the best possible sound. This is achieved from labels like Analogue Productions putting out excellent reissues of classic albums on vinyl on pure 180g vinyl at 33rpm, with the option on many releases for 45rpm. These reel to reel releases are the next evolution in this pursuit of excellent.
Unlike traditional reel to reel releases that were often created at higher dub speeds for convenience, the audiophile releases here are often transferred 'real time' for the best possible sound quality and Analogue Productions uses the best possible equipment for this including serviced and carefully set-up Ampex machines.
Reel to reel isn't an inexpensive hobby, and here at Audio Affair we've very much gotten the reel to reel bug in chasing the very best sound quality. While a well set-up high end turntable can sound absolutely fabulous, it can't touch the sound of a well mastered reel to reel tape - everything opens up in the soundstage, dynamics are more impressive, the sound is more cohesive and its quickly clear this is as good as it gets.
