Description
The PMC Twenty5 23i Speakers are the most popular in the Twenty5 range. The i stands for improved and new technologies have been used to optimize the sound. They are the most compact floor-standers in the range and have a 140mm long throw-g-weave design. The tweeter is a 19mm ferrofluid-cooled unit. Notably, the power handling is 150 watts. Moreover, the bass is enhanced by using the PMC-designed Advanced Transmission Line system.
Advanced Transmission Line system
The advanced Transmission Line system of the PMC Twenty5 23i Speakers is a kind of bass-loading system. This creates a natural and uncoloured sound. Sounds coming from the rear of the bass/midrange unit are fed through a lined tunnel. Additionally, the highly braced cabinet resists resonances. The tunnel is lined with custom-designed acoustic materials that absorb all frequencies apart from the ultra-low bass. The bass is then fed out through a specially designed port known as Laminair. As a result, the bass is less dependent on the volume level and the sound is more balanced.
Laminair port
The PMC Twenty5 23i Speakers have a Formula One-inspired Laminair aerodynamic vent. This boosts bass performance by reducing turbulence and drag. Consequently, air noise is reduced and the bass has remarkable timing and a good dynamic range.
PMC-designed Bass / mid-range drivers
PMC-designed drivers are used by the PMC Twenty5 23i speakers. The long-throw g-weave coned bass/midrange unit has a cast iron chassis and a smooth sound. Additionally, there is an ultra-vivid midrange clarity. The cone is made of resin-bonded, fine-weave fibre glass. This material was found to be stronger than paper and capable of maintaining an uncoloured sound. Lastly, the magnet and motor system is much more powerful than previous iterations.
The ferrofluid-cooled tweeter
The PMC Twenty5 23i Speaker uses a tweeter that is based on the top-of-the-line tweeter from the Twenty series. To give a high power rating it is ferrofluid cooled and is 19mm in diameter. Additionally, the surround has a wide dispersion waveguide that creates a larger high-frequency sound field.
The quality crossover
Multi-driver speakers such as the PMC Twenty5 23i need a crossover to split the audio into frequency bands. Moreover, the crossover must also provide a flat frequency response overall. Each speaker is then fed with the correct frequency range. Notably, the two-way crossover in the PMC Twenty5 21i Speaker was designed using computer modeling as well as extensive listening tests. The build quality is also excellent with military-grade glass-fibre circuit boards and wide board tracks. This reduces resistance and provides good current-carrying capability. Lastly, only quality components are used for a long life.
The cabinet
The PMC Twenty5 23i Speaker is a floor-standing design with a sloped front cabinet. This helps to keep the low and high frequencies in phase. Moreover, the cabinet was designed by using accelerometers. These were used to measure panel resonances. Different isolation materials were tried using this method and the cabinet dimensions were optimized. Lastly, the stainless steel spiked feet can be adjusted from the top.
