Description
The Wharfedale Diamond 12.Ci centre speaker builds upon the long-established reputation of the Diamond series as one of the strongest values in high fidelity audio. For decades, Wharfedale’s Diamond products have been regarded as the place where true hi-fi performance begins, consistently receiving awards for outstanding sound quality at highly accessible prices.
The recent Diamond 12 Series, which arrived in 2020, refined that tradition and delivered a level of engineering and musical accuracy well above its price category. The new Diamond 12i update brings improvements in finish, subtle acoustic upgrades and modernised presentation without adding cost to the consumer. The result is a centre speaker that preserves everything listeners loved about the Diamond 12 Series while looking and performing even better.
Exceptional Value in a Changing Market
Since their launch, the Diamond 12 models have dominated the entry-level loudspeaker sector and have been especially impressive during a time when most manufacturers were forced to raise prices. Wharfedale maintained original pricing for the entire Diamond 12 Series, allowing the value of the range to improve year after year while competitors increased costs or compromised build quality.
This steady approach helped the Diamond 12 line become Britain’s best-selling budget loudspeaker family across its lifespan. Wharfedale resisted the temptation to replace the range because it continued to perform strongly and satisfied customers at every level. The Diamond 12i update exists not because of necessity but because evolving manufacturing techniques offered an opportunity to apply refinements while keeping prices competitive.
The Diamond 12i Range and What It Offers
The Wharfedale Diamond 12.Ci Centre Speaker belong to the broader Diamond 12i Series, a full collection of stereo and home cinema loudspeakers designed for outstanding affordability and musical accuracy. The stereo selection includes the Diamond 12.0i and Diamond 12.1i standmount speakers, along with the Diamond 12.3i and Diamond 12.4i floorstanding speakers.
Home theatre setups are supported by the Diamond 12.Ci centre speaker and a dedicated effects speaker that can be wall-mounted or placed on top of the 12.1i or 12.3i models to create height channels for formats such as Dolby Atmos. With every model maintaining the same dimensions and pricing as its Diamond 12 predecessor, the 12i Series effectively offers around twenty two percent better value in real terms after inflation adjustment.
Updated Aesthetics with Premium Appeal
Wharfedale has modernised the finishes of the Diamond 12i range to provide a more contemporary visual presence. The previous wood effect options have been replaced by three freshly styled alternatives designed to suit a wider variety of interiors. Deep Black offers a rich semi-matte surface with a clean and elegant appearance.
Stone Grey continues the semi-matte theme but with a bold visual statement that complements modern décor. Classic Walnut combines the natural warmth of wood grain with a contrasting black front baffle for an upscale, timeless look. These finishes not only elevate the visual character of the range but also reflect improvements in production quality, giving each model a more refined and premium feel without affecting the retail price.
Performance Enhancements and Acoustic Refinements
While updating the appearance of the range, Wharfedale also reviewed the design of the speakers to determine where improvements could be introduced without raising costs. Under the direction of Peter Comeau, with support from engineers Dan Bailey Ornellas and Oliver Davies, the team focused on airflow behaviour and bass port tuning.
Through computational fluid dynamics, laser interferometry and extensive listening sessions, they developed a revised bass reflex port and updated internal damping strategies. These refinements deliver cleaner bass, better articulation in small rooms, more seamless transitions between frequency regions and improved spatial consistency regardless of placement.
The updates preserve the neutrality and transparency that define the Diamond sound while enhancing musical engagement, clarity and dynamic expression across the entire series.
Driver Technology, Cabinet Engineering and Overall Construction
The Wharfedale Diamond 12.Ci Centre Speaker uses the same Klarity composite driver technology found throughout the 12i range. These diaphragms employ a blend of polypropylene and mica to achieve a lightweight, rigid and low colouration structure capable of fast and accurate response.
A precision magnet system with an aluminium compensation ring reduces distortion, while the voice coil is wound on a glass fibre and epoxy resin bobbin for improved power handling and thermal stability. High frequencies are produced by a 25 millimetre woven polyester dome tweeter with excellent dispersion and natural tonality.
The cabinet employs braced wood fibre board panels of varying thickness to suppress unwanted resonance, ensuring the drivers operate with maximum clarity. The result is a centre speaker that delivers articulate dialogue, smooth integration and true high fidelity performance within an accessible price category.
