Description
The Wharfedale Diamond 12.4i Speakers (Pair) continue the long legacy of high value, high performance audio that has made the Diamond name a benchmark for affordable hi fi systems. Since the first Diamond models appeared decades ago, Wharfedale has consistently delivered products that offer exceptional clarity, musical accuracy and material quality at prices far below those of their competitors.
The Diamond 12 Series, introduced in 2020, became a defining example of this commitment. It offered a level of refinement and build quality previously unseen in the entry tier, earning widespread praise and global awards. With the updated Diamond 12.4i design, Wharfedale brings improved styling and subtle but meaningful acoustic enhancements.
An Unbeaten Legacy of Value and Consistency
For five years the Diamond 12 range has dominated the budget loudspeaker category. Its well-engineered cabinets, carefully designed drivers and balanced acoustic performance proved extremely difficult for other brands to compete with, especially during a time of rising material and manufacturing costs. Many companies were forced to increase prices or reduce quality, but Wharfedale maintained the same pricing from launch without sacrificing performance.
This stability meant that the Diamond 12 range became more attractive every year as inflation increased the cost of competing alternatives. The strong popularity of the range also meant Wharfedale did not need to replace it quickly. Instead, the Diamond 12.4i arrives as a thoughtful evolution made possible by improved production techniques rather than by any need to correct flaws.
The Diamond 12i Range
The Wharfedale Diamond 12.4i Speakers (Pair) form part of the broader Diamond 12i Series, a complete family of stereo and home cinema loudspeakers designed to offer class-leading performance at affordable prices. The stereo range includes two standmount models, the Diamond 12.0i and Diamond 12.1i, along with two floorstanding models, the Diamond 12.3i and the larger Diamond 12.4i.
Home theatre enthusiasts are supported by a dedicated centre channel speaker and an effects speaker that can either be wall-mounted or placed on top of the 12.1i or 12.3i to create height channels for formats such as Dolby Atmos.
Modern Finishes for a Contemporary Look
The Diamond 12.4i speakers feature updated finishes that give the range a more modern, refined appearance compared with the original Diamond 12 series. Wharfedale has replaced the previous wood effect options with three new finishes that better complement contemporary interiors. Deep Black provides a smooth semi-matte surface that delivers a clean, understated aesthetic.
Stone Grey offers a bold yet versatile colour that suits a wide range of decorative styles. Classic Walnut combines the warmth of traditional wood grain with a semi-matte black front baffle, creating an elegant contrast with a premium feel. These improvements in appearance are matched by an elevated standard of construction quality, offering a level of finish that is rarely found at this price level.
Performance Enhancements and Technical Refinements
While updating the visual appearance, Wharfedale also examined every aspect of the design to determine where performance improvements could be introduced without raising costs. Under the guidance of Director of Acoustic Design Peter Comeau, the engineering team carried out extensive testing and analysis using techniques such as computational fluid dynamics and laser interferometry.
The result was a newly refined bass reflex port system with better airflow control and improved low-frequency behaviour. Internal damping was also revised to provide greater clarity, smoother transitions between bass and midrange and more consistent performance in real-world listening environments. These changes retain the neutrality and transparent character of the original Diamond 12 models while increasing overall dynamic expression and musical involvement.
Klarity Drivers, Advanced Components and Cabinet Engineering
The Wharfedale Diamond 12.4i Speakers (Pair) use Klarity driver cones made from a composite blend of polypropylene and mica, a material chosen for its rigidity, light weight and low colouration. Additional structural ribs help maintain a flat response without the need for a high-damping surround, allowing more expressive and dynamic bass.
The motor system includes a precision magnet and an aluminium compensation ring to minimise distortion caused by inductance variation. High frequencies are delivered by a 25 millimetre woven polyester dome tweeter with a carefully shaped front plate for wide dispersion and natural treble. Inside the cabinet, Intelligent Spot Bracing reduces resonance and preserves driver integrity.
The result is a speaker that offers accuracy, depth and musical engagement far beyond what would normally be expected at its accessible price.
