Description

The Wharfedale Diamond 12.3i Speakers (Pair) embody the long-standing heritage that has made the Diamond name one of the most respected in affordable high fidelity audio. Since the introduction of the original Diamond models in the 1980s, Wharfedale has continually pushed the standard for performance, engineering quality and accessibility.

The Diamond 12 series, released in 2020, became the clearest expression of this philosophy by offering sound quality and craftsmanship that were far ahead of traditional entry-level expectations. The new Diamond 12.3i speakers continue that story with refinements that elevate both performance and aesthetics while keeping the price identical to the earlier Diamond 12.3.

This commitment ensures that value for money has improved significantly in real terms, making the 12.3i speakers stronger than ever.

A Legacy of Best-Selling Performance

For five years the Diamond 12 series held its place as Britain’s best-selling budget loudspeaker range. Its strong cabinet construction, carefully engineered drive units and engaging sound character made it exceptionally hard for rival brands to challenge. Many manufacturers were forced to raise prices or reduce quality due to rising production costs, but Wharfedale kept every Diamond 12 model at its original launch price without compromise.

This stability allowed the Diamond 12 range to become more competitive each year as inflation made alternatives less attractive. With such strong market success, Wharfedale had no urgent reason to develop a replacement. The Diamond 12.3i arrives not from necessity but from opportunity, made possible by improvements in manufacturing processes that allow refinements without increasing costs for customers.

The Complete Diamond 12i Loudspeaker Range

The Wharfedale Diamond 12.3i Speakers (Pair) sit within a full family of updated models that make up the Diamond 12i Series. The structure mirrors the previous Diamond 12 lineup, offering four stereo speakers in total. The standmount options are the Diamond 12.0i and Diamond 12.1i, while the floorstanding options are the Diamond 12.3i and the larger Diamond 12.4i. Home cinema use is supported by a matching centre speaker as well as a dedicated effects speaker.

The effects speaker can be wall-mounted or positioned on top of the 12.1i or 12.3i to create height channels for immersive formats such as Dolby Atmos. Crucially, every model in the range maintains the same price and physical dimensions as its Diamond 12 predecessor.

Updated Finishes for a Modern Appearance

The Wharfedale Diamond 12.3i Speakers (Pair) benefit from a refreshed visual identity that enhances their presence in any room. The earlier Diamond 12 models offered four wood effect finishes, but the Diamond 12i range introduces three new finishes with a more contemporary aesthetic. Deep Black provides a smooth semi-matte appearance with a clean modern style that suits minimalist interiors.

Stone Grey offers a distinctive but subtle design statement that blends well with a wide variety of décor choices. Classic Walnut combines the warmth of natural wood with a semi matte black baffle for a premium and timeless look. The improved finish quality and cabinet detailing exceed expectations at this price point, offering a level of craftsmanship normally associated with far more expensive loudspeakers.

Engineering Enhancements and Acoustic Refinement

When developing the updated range, Wharfedale used advances in production techniques to explore opportunities for acoustic improvement while keeping the cost unchanged. Under the direction of Director of Acoustic Design Peter Comeau, the engineering team focused heavily on bass port tuning and airflow behaviour.

Using methods such as laser interferometry, computational fluid dynamics and controlled listening sessions, they refined the bass reflex system to reduce turbulence and improve clarity. Revised internal damping and improved tuning deliver more articulate low frequencies with better integration between the bass and midrange.

These improvements are especially noticeable in real world listening spaces where speaker placement is often limited. The enhancements maintain the neutrality and transparency of the original Diamond 12 series while adding greater dynamic expression and overall musical engagement.

Components, Cabinet Design and Sonic Character

The Wharfedale Diamond 12.3i Speakers (Pair) utilise drivers with Klarity diaphragms, made from polypropylene reinforced with mica to create a stiff, lightweight cone with low colouration. The addition of ribs further increases rigidity without adding unwanted mass. The drivers are paired with a precision magnet assembly that includes an aluminium compensation ring to reduce inductance variations and maintain cleaner sound.

A glass fibre and epoxy resin bobbin provides improved thermal stability and strength. High frequencies come from a 25 mm woven polyester dome tweeter with a carefully designed front plate for wide dispersion. Inside the cabinet, Intelligent Spot Bracing reduces resonance without transferring vibration, and the overall structure uses wood fibre panels of varied thickness for optimal acoustic behaviour.

The result is a speaker that delivers clarity, balance and expressive musical performance well beyond typical expectations at this price.
