Description
The Wharfedale Denton 1S Speakers (Pair) are a striking modern interpretation of one of Wharfedale’s most distinctive loudspeaker concepts from the 1970s. Inspired by the original 1974 Denton 1, this latest Heritage Series model blends retro design influence with thoroughly contemporary acoustic engineering.
While the original Denton 1 stood out for its futuristic styling and unusual coaxial driver arrangement, the new Denton 1S has been completely redesigned from the ground up to deliver dramatically improved sound quality, versatility, and performance.
Retaining key visual references such as compact dimensions, softly curved cabinet edges, and the coaxial driver concept, the Denton 1S pays tribute to its predecessor while embracing modern materials, precision engineering, and advanced acoustic design. The result is a loudspeaker that feels timeless, combining classic Wharfedale heritage with contemporary styling and room-friendly practicality.
Compact Versatility with Room-Filling Sound
Designed to fit seamlessly into modern homes and flexible listening environments, the Wharfedale Denton 1S Speakers (Pair) offer exceptional versatility without compromising performance. Measuring just 330 x 236 x 229mm, the speakers are compact enough for shelves, desks, sideboards, or wall mounting, yet capable of delivering a remarkably full-scale and immersive sound.
Unlike many traditional bookshelf speakers, the Denton 1S has been specifically engineered for close-to-wall placement, making it ideal for smaller spaces or contemporary interiors where positioning flexibility matters. Whether used in domestic Hi-Fi systems, studio spaces, or stylish commercial environments, the Denton 1S maintains excellent tonal balance and wide dispersion throughout the room.
Its carefully tuned 11.5-litre bass reflex cabinet achieves bass extension down to 45Hz, providing impressive depth and warmth from a compact enclosure while maintaining clarity, precision, and effortless musical engagement across a wide range of genres.
Advanced Coaxial Driver Technology
At the heart of the Wharfedale Denton 1S Speakers (Pair) is a completely new purpose-built coaxial drive unit designed specifically for this model. Unlike the original 1974 Denton 1, which relied on a simple dual-cone “whizzer” driver, the Denton 1S employs a sophisticated two-way coaxial design featuring a 165mm enhanced polypropylene mid/bass driver paired concentrically with a 25mm silk-dome tweeter.
This arrangement allows both drivers to radiate from a single acoustic centre, creating excellent time alignment, phase coherence, and highly stable stereo imaging.
The specially developed mid/bass cone profile improves rigidity while controlling breakup modes, helping deliver smooth and natural midrange performance with reduced colouration. High frequencies remain detailed yet refined, aided by a damped rear chamber and high-flux tweeter motor system. The result is a cohesive, focused soundstage with impressive off-axis consistency, ensuring immersive listening throughout the room.
Precision Crossover and Intelligent Tuning
Wharfedale invested extensive development time refining the Denton 1S crossover network to achieve exceptional integration between drivers and balanced tonal performance.
The crossover employs advanced Linkwitz-Riley 4th order acoustic slopes at 2.6kHz and uses carefully selected components including low-loss polypropylene capacitors, silicon-iron core inductors, and air-core treble inductors mounted on a short-path PCB layout for optimal signal flow. Complementing the crossover is Wharfedale’s innovative “Brilliance Switch,” positioned on the rear panel.
This user-selectable EQ adjustment gently lifts frequencies between 2 and 4kHz by 1.5dB, helping tailor the sound for wall-mounted or close-to-wall installations. This added flexibility allows the Denton 1S to adapt easily to different room layouts and listening preferences. Whether stand-mounted in a dedicated Hi-Fi setup or placed within shelving furniture, the speakers maintain clarity, openness, and remarkably natural tonal balance.
Modern Cabinet Engineering Inspired by the Past
Although visually inspired by the original Denton 1, the cabinet design of the Wharfedale Denton 1S Speakers (Pair) has been entirely modernised to meet the standards of contemporary high-performance loudspeakers. The original polyurethane enclosure has been replaced with a much more acoustically refined cabinet constructed from dense fibreboard panels of varying thicknesses.
These layers are carefully bonded and internally braced to reduce unwanted resonance and improve structural rigidity. The front baffle is subtly recessed for additional stability, while the coaxial driver arrangement minimises cabinet cut-outs and further enhances rigidity.
Around the rear, the carefully engineered double-flared bass reflex port uses a soft rubber inner flare to minimise turbulence and reduce port noise. The cabinet design works in harmony with the coaxial driver and crossover to produce outstanding coherence, tight bass response, and a stable soundstage, regardless of speaker placement within the room.
Contemporary Style with Timeless Character
The Wharfedale Denton 1S Speakers (Pair) combine modern aesthetics with unmistakable Heritage Series character, making them equally attractive as both audio components and interior design pieces. Available in matte black, matte white, or an eye-catching contemporary blue finish, the Denton 1S brings fresh visual appeal to modern living spaces while still reflecting Wharfedale’s long-standing design heritage.
The smooth matte finishes echo the premium appearance of Wharfedale’s EVO Series loudspeakers, while the magnetically attached protective grille and silver Heritage badge subtly acknowledge the speaker’s historical inspiration. Compact proportions and softly curved cabinet edges further reinforce the clean and contemporary design language.
Whether integrated into minimalist interiors, stylish workspaces, or traditional listening rooms, the Denton 1S blends effortlessly into its environment while still making a confident visual statement. It is a speaker designed not only to sound exceptional, but also to complement contemporary lifestyles beautifully.
Engineered for Music Lovers Everywhere
Developed over a two-year period under the guidance of Wharfedale Director of Acoustic Design Peter Comeau, the Wharfedale Denton 1S Speakers (Pair) were created to combine flexibility, musicality, and broad compatibility in one highly engaging compact loudspeaker. With an 88dB sensitivity rating, 8-ohm nominal impedance, and compatibility with amplifiers ranging from 30 to 100 watts, the Denton 1S integrates easily into a wide variety of systems.
Its carefully balanced sound signature delivers expressive midrange clarity, textured bass, smooth treble detail, and exceptional stereo imaging, creating an immersive listening experience across virtually all music genres.
Thanks to its excellent off-axis response and flexible positioning options, the Denton 1S performs equally well in traditional stereo setups, shelving installations, desktop systems, or wall-mounted applications. It is a loudspeaker designed to fit naturally into modern life while delivering the engaging, natural sound Wharfedale has been celebrated for since 1932.
