Description
The Townshend Audio Seismic Piano Isolators (Set of 3) are designed to decouple a grand piano from the floor, allowing the instrument to perform free from structural vibration. Each isolator comprises a suspended triangular platform supported by three adjustable Seismic Load Cells™, positioned beneath the piano’s legs.
A central recess accommodates and centres all standard castors, ensuring stable placement. Suitable for pianos weighing up to 500 kg, the isolators raise the instrument by approximately 25 mm, a change that is virtually imperceptible during performance. By interrupting the mechanical path between the piano and floor, these isolators prevent energy loss and unwanted resonance, creating a more controlled acoustic environment for both player and listener.
Seismic Load Cell Technology
At the heart of the design is Townshend’s proprietary Seismic Load Cell™ technology, developed over decades of research into vibration control. Each Load Cell uses a high-tensile steel spring encased within a flexible synthetic rubber jacket, incorporating air-resistant damping. This configuration forms a low-pass mechanical filter that isolates vibrations from 3 Hz upward.
The result is a floating platform that shields the piano from ground-borne disturbances such as footfall, traffic and building movement. By severing structural coupling, the isolators ensure that vibrational energy is not reflected back into the instrument. This enables greater tonal purity and allows the piano’s natural resonance to develop without interference.
Enhanced Tone and Responsiveness
A grand piano radiates sound not only through the air but also through its legs into the supporting floor. This structural transmission can absorb energy and blur tonal detail, particularly in the lower registers. By decoupling the instrument from the floor, the Seismic Piano Isolators reduce this energy loss and prevent resonance from muddying the tone.
Players often experience clearer bass, more articulate treble and improved dynamic responsiveness, especially at softer levels where nuance and timing are critical. The instrument feels more alive under the hands, with greater immediacy and control. By allowing the piano to operate in a mechanically stable environment, the isolators help reveal the instrument's full expressive range.
Neighbour Friendly Performance
Beyond improving tonal clarity, the isolators significantly reduce vibration transmitted into the building structure. In apartments, studios and shared venues, this structural coupling can carry low-frequency energy into adjacent rooms, creating disturbance. By isolating vibrations above 3 Hz, the Seismic Piano Isolators prevent this transfer at the source.
This makes high-level practice and performance more considerate in noise-sensitive environments. The technology is particularly valuable in urban settings and historic buildings where floors may be resonant or fragile. By keeping the piano’s energy within the room, the isolators protect both relationships and property while maintaining the integrity of the musical experience.
Installation and Practical Design
Installation is straightforward and requires no modification to the piano. Each triangular platform is placed beneath a leg, and the adjustable Load Cells allow precise levelling, even on uneven floors. A purpose-built hydraulic jack is available to assist with safe lifting during installation. The robust construction ensures long-term stability, while the discreet design integrates unobtrusively beneath the instrument.
Backed by a five-year warranty and manufactured in the UK, the Townshend Audio Seismic Piano Isolators (Set of 3) combine engineering precision with practical usability. They represent a refined solution for pianists seeking greater tonal clarity and responsible vibration control in any performance setting.
