Description
The System Audio Signature 5 Speaker is a compact bookshelf model. It is part of the Signature range that also includes a floor-standing set. The two-way design focuses on sound quality and includes two in-house designed drivers. These are a 1” tweeter with an acoustic lens and a 5.5” woofer with a lightweight cone. There is also a reflex port to boost the bass.
Next, the quality cabinet comes in satin black or white and the speaker has a seven-year guarantee. Lastly, the maximum power handling is 150 watts and the frequency response is 40Hz to 25kHz.
1” Signature DXT tweeter with acoustic lens
The tweeter fitted to the System Audio Signature 5 Speaker features an acoustic lens. This gives the high frequencies a wider dispersion. As a result, the listening sweet spot is larger. Normally speaker tweeters need to be close to ear level to give the best results.
Otherwise, the bass would tend to dominate the sound. Most speaker manufacturers use a waveguide to widen the listening area. However, an acoustic lens is one step above this.
5.5” woofer with bass port for stunning bass.
The System Audio Signature 5 Speakers punch above their weight, with a high bass output for the size. The cone is made of a lightweight material that gives a fast response and a high output. The bass goes down to 40Hz which is impressive for a bookshelf speaker.
Additionally, the bass port boosts the low-frequency output. Next, for even more bass System Audio also produces a range of three subwoofers. The subwoofers have the same look and design aesthetic.
A quality crossover
A crossover is used by the System Audio Signature 5 Speaker. This splits the audio spectrum into two parts. The high frequencies are sent to the tweeter via a high pass filter while only the lower frequencies go to the woofer.
It is important that the best components are used. In the past capacitors had a paper dielectric that attracted moisture and went electrically leaky over time. Modern capacitors use a polypropylene dielectric that will last for many years.
Why bookshelf speakers?
The System Audio Signature 5 Speakers are small enough to go almost anywhere. At approximately 30cm tall they can be used next to a screen or mounted on stands. Bookshelf speakers have the advantage of not dominating the room.
Moreover, it is common for them to be used with a subwoofer. The subwoofer can be kept out of sight for an unobtrusive but punchy system. Lastly, bookshelf speakers usually cost less than floor standers.
