- Crossover & Cabinet Specs:
- Crossover:
- 3-way crossover with premium-grade capacitors, inductors, resistors and heavy-trace printed circuit board
- Tweeter-to-Midrange crossover: 1.8 kHz
- Midrange-to-woofer crossover: 170 Hz
- Cabinet:
- Acoustically Centered Time Alignment architecture.
- Acoustically-centered architecture orients the mid-range and woofer arrays in rotational-symmetry around the tweeter, ensuring that low, mid, and high-frequencies emanate from the same effective point in space, creating a coherent, integrated, faithful acoustic image.
- Time-aligned cabinet geometry introduces microsecond-level time delays between the drivers, ensuring that the effective acoustic-center of each driver is equidistant from the listener. The result is improved linearity and directionality throughout the crossover frequencies, and a more accurate soundstage.
- Quad 5.25” woofers in Force-Balanced Opposed Array energize any room with deep, accurate, evenly distributed bass, while contributing a net-zero vibration force to the cabinet and other components.
- Dual 4.5” midrange drivers share a dedicated acoustic-suspension enclosure, symmetrical around the tweeter.
- Chamfered front baffle and flush-mounted drivers reduce edge diffraction and improve on-axis and off-axis high-frequency response.
- Extra-thick 1” (25mm) driver baffles ensure a rigid, resonance-free mounting for all drivers.
- FEA-optimized ¾” (18mm) cabinet construction, extensive bracing, and acoustic insulation eliminate acoustic and structural resonances, ensuring an inert enclosure and an uncolored - response, even at the highest drive levels.
Description
The SVS Ultra Evolution Tower Speakers are the smallest floor-stander in the Ultra range. They feature quad 5.25” woofers in a back-to-back configuration. There are also two 4.5” midrange units and a centrally placed 1" tweeter.
The main feature of the speaker is the curved front baffle and adjacent speaker placement. This has the effect of correcting any timing errors leading to a more coherent sound. The back-to-back woofers also reduce the effect of room modes. Maximum power handling is 300 Watts.
Curved baffle for accurate sound
A curved front baffle is the main feature of the SVS Ultra Evolution Tower Speakers. This places each driver at a slightly different distance from the listener. As a result, the phase coherence and timing are corrected. This creates a single point source effect creating a convincing and immersive sound. Moreover, the imaging and sound staging are improved.
Diamond Carbon coated tweeters for stunning highs
Each SVS Ultra Evolution Tower Speaker features a centrally placed tweeter. The aluminium dome is coated with a thin layer of Diamond Carbon. This is applied by vapour deposition and has the effect of increasing the rigidity of the cone.
As a result, the high frequencies extend well beyond human hearing. Notably, the presentation is airy and clear. Additionally, the low-frequency range of the tweeter is improved. This ensures a good match with the midrange unit. Lastly, the tweeter grill has been upgraded and has improved dispersion.
Four opposed woofers for stunning bass
The SVS Ultra Evolution Tower Speakers each have two sets of dual opposing woofers. The woofers are placed at the top and bottom of the cabinet to either side of the midrange units. This reduces the effect of room modes and ensures there are no dead spots with reduced bass in the listening room.
Another advantage of back-to-back woofers is a reduction in colouration as well as resonances. Lastly, the two midrange units provide a clean and clear output in the all-important vocal range.
Advanced cabinet and crossover design
The complex cabinet design of the SVS Ultra Evolution Tower Speakers features internal chambers behind the bass and midrange unit. This isolates them so that there is no mutual interference or resonances. The sound is uncoloured and pure.
Additionally, the crossover uses top-quality components for a long life and to ensure a coherent sound. Finally, the speaker's drivers feature a Precision-cast aluminium alloy basket that ensures the cones are accurately placed.
Crossover design
Three-way speakers need a well-designed crossover to provide a flat frequency response. The SVS Ultra Evolution Tower Speakers have a computer-modelled crossover design that splits the audio band into three components.
Filters are created by using capacitors and inductors. The capacitors used must maintain their performance over decades without going leaky or changing in value. As a a result polypropylene types are used. Historically a paper dielectric was used, this type of capacitor often went electrically leaky over time resulting in component damage.
Who are SVS?
SVS speakers are made in the US. The company is renowned for its world-class speakers and subwoofers. Their design ethos is to use only the best components in a no-compromise design. The speakers have a reference quality sound at an affordable price.
The Flagship range is known as the Ultra Evolution series and comprises a range of tower speakers as well as a bookshelf design. There are also specialist home cinema speakers in the range.
