Description
The SVS PB17 Ultra Subwoofer is the flagship model in the range and replaces the PB16 Ultra. There are several innovations including a massive 17" dual voice coil woofer and dual mono Class D amplifiers. Additionally, there is a large motor assembly that can handle the power.
Notably, a highly efficient switch mode power supply is used that puts less load on the home's mains supply. Notably, the advanced DSP engine is controlled by a dedicated app. Lastly, inputs include balanced XLR as well as standard RCA connectors.
17” ultra R Evolution driver
The woofer of the SVS PB17 Ultra Subwoofer features a massive glass fibre 17” cone. Moreover, the cone is driven by a very large 55lb toroidal ferrite magnet motor assembly. This arrangement can deliver masses of bass but with fine control and finesse.
The frequency range goes down to an earth-shaking 13Hz. Certain instruments can go as low as 13 Hz, particularly organs and tubas. There are also special effects such as explosions that can have such low notes.
Dual mono amplifier
To provide enough power each voice coil is driven by its own Class D amplifier. This dual mono system reduces the load on the house's mains supply. Class D is up to 90% efficient, needs less power, and generates less heat than linear systems.
Fast-switching MOSET output transistors are used. The output is made up of a string of high-frequency pulses. These are Pulse widths modulated by the audio signal. Close-together pulses produce a higher output. Lastly, the output stage uses a high pass filter to recover the audio for the driver.
Switch mode power supply.
An efficient switch mode power supply is used by the SVS PB17 Ultra Subwoofer. Switch mode supplies are preferred by high-power systems as they have good regulation and can use smaller transformers.
Less heat is generated and the transformer used is switched at a high frequency. Regulation is controlled by using feedback to the control IC. Several secondary windings are used to create the various voltages needed by the subwoofer.
Advanced DSP
The SVS PB17 Ultra Subwoofer features a sophisticated Digital Signal processor. A 295 Mhz Analog Devices Chip set is deployed which is the most advanced ever used in a domestic product. THE DSP engine is used to control the equalization as well as other settings. It is also used for room correction and to optimize the sound.
SVS subwoofer control app
To control the DSP engine in the SVS PB17 Ultra Subwoofer a SVS subwoofer control app is available. The app can be installed on a smartphone or tablet and has many features. There is a six-channel parametric equalizer as well as a low-pass filter and phase control. The app can also control the volume. lastly, auto room EQ is available with an update.
Triple ported Acoustically tuned cabinet
The SVS PB17 Ultra Subwoofer has three 4” ports for even more bass output. This allows for more airflow. Moreover, the cabinet is made of double-thick MDF with heavy bracing. This reduces the chance of any resonance or rattles. Lastly, a removable grille cover is provided to protect the driver.
Connecting the SVS PB17 Ultra Subwoofer
A range of connection options are available with the SVS PB17 Ultra Subwoofer. Firstly there are RCA inputs that can be used for a single subwoofer output from an AV receiver. You can also connect the left and right outputs from a preamp. There is also an LFE input. Lastly, there are two balanced left and right inputs that have a pass-through output.
