Description
The Sumiko Oriole MC Phono Cartridge embodies the tonally balanced, refined and fatigue-free character for which Sumiko is celebrated worldwide. Positioned as a meaningful upgrade from the acclaimed Songbird and approaching the performance of the venerable Starling, Oriole confidently enters reference territory.
Its low-impedance generator and nude Shibata line-contact stylus combine to deliver impeccable tracking, exceptional detail retrieval and emotionally engaging dynamics. Fast attack, sweet resolution and a deeply musical presentation make it endlessly listenable.
Oriole preserves the warmth and natural flow of analogue playback, portraying instruments and voices in organic balance with their surrounding ambience. Silent in the groove, it allows music to emerge from a stark black background into a richly layered and immersive soundstage.
Precision Craftsmanship, Hand-Assembled in Japan
Each Sumiko Oriole MC Phono Cartridge is meticulously hand-assembled in Yokohama by the skilled craftsmen at Excel Sound, a partnership maintained for nearly four decades. The construction process reflects exceptional attention to detail, from microscopic inspection of components to final performance testing.
Every cartridge is individually evaluated for electrical balance, channel separation, trackability and compliance with strict specifications. This level of quality control ensures consistent performance and long-term reliability. The open-body Reference Series design further demonstrates Sumiko’s commitment to purity, reducing housing-induced resonance and coloration.
Built from the finest materials Japan has to offer, Oriole stands as a testament to traditional craftsmanship combined with modern engineering precision.
Nude Shibata Stylus and Reinforced Cantilever
At the heart of the Sumiko Oriole MC Phono Cartridge is a nude Shibata stylus crafted from a single piece of natural diamond. Its 6.5µm x 40µm profile traces fine groove modulations with remarkable accuracy while maintaining a rich, even-handed approach to detail that avoids analytical harshness.
By reducing moving mass, the nude diamond enhances fidelity and responsiveness. The stylus is mounted to a hollow, alloy-reinforced aluminium cantilever that balances rigidity with low mass, ensuring rapid and precise transmission of groove information to the moving coil assembly. This synergy delivers extended frequency response from 12Hz to 45kHz, allowing Oriole to reproduce subtle textures, harmonic overtones and micro-dynamics with striking realism.
Advanced Generator and Magnetic Architecture
Oriole’s low internal impedance of 5.5Ω is achieved through fewer turns of specially selected high-purity copper coil wire. This design shortens the signal path, reduces moving mass and enhances speed, resolution and dynamic expression. Individually wound cross-coils ensure clean, balanced signal transfer, while the high-efficiency magnetic circuit features a warm, smooth-sounding Alnico magnet paired with pure iron yokes and pole pieces.
Carefully oriented materials minimise distortion, magnetic saturation and energy loss. The result is a 0.3mV low-output signal characterized by clarity, authority and coherence. Combined with a purpose-selected synthetic rubber MC damper, the cartridge achieves superb resonance control and stable tracking across a recommended 1.8–2.2g tracking force range.
Resonance Control and Structural Integrity
Resonance management is central to the Sumiko Oriole MC Phono Cartridge’s design philosophy. The open-body structure reduces resonance-born distortion typically propagated by enclosed housings. Internally, the magnetic circuit components are mechanically damped to further suppress unwanted vibration.
The terminal and mounting plates utilise PEEK, an advanced material often found in aerospace applications for its extreme mechanical stability, stiffness and long-term durability. This ultra-stable platform allows unwanted resonance to pass through and dissipate harmlessly down the tonearm.
By controlling energy transfer at multiple points, Oriole achieves remarkable clarity and natural tonal balance, contributing significantly to its relaxed, immersive and highly musical presentation.
Technical Excellence in Every Detail
The Sumiko Oriole MC Phono Cartridge offers impressive technical performance to match its sonic refinement. With 30dB channel separation at 1kHz and precise 0.5dB channel balance, it delivers accurate stereo imaging and focused soundstage placement. Compliance is rated at 12 x 10⁻⁶ cm/dyne (100Hz), and tracking ability reaches 70μm at 315Hz with 2g vertical tracking force.
The cartridge weighs 7.3g and features a vertical tracking angle of 20°, making it compatible with a wide range of high-quality tonearms. Designed for load impedances above 60Ω, Oriole combines meticulous engineering with inspired musicality, offering analogue enthusiasts a deeply engaging and emotionally satisfying listening experience.
