Description
The Stirling Broadcast SB-88 Domestic Monitor Loudspeaker is another outstanding design from Derek Hughes. Based on a two-way design, the SB-88 is similar to the LS3/6, but features a slightly smaller cabinet and no super tweeter. The Low and High frequency units are the same custom units which are utilised in the LS3/6.
With a power handling of 90 watts and a frequency response of 48Hz-18kHz, the SB-88 are a well specified and capable loudspeaker, and with a sensitivity of 87dB should be simple to pair with a wide range of amplifiers. Utilising a 22cm SB-4432 Low Frequency drive unit and a 27mm SB-4434 High Frequency unit, the SB-88 have an impedance of 8 ohms so are an easy load. The terminals are bi-wirable and accept 4mm plugs and bare wire up to 4mm.

I own many brands and models of speaker. Very few manage to earn a long-term residency in my home. The 88s have earned a permanent place in my stables.
From what I've gathered, only 250 pairs of 88s were made and it's doubtful that Stirling will produce any more. That's a shame because these are truly special and didn't garner the press they so rightly deserved. Get a pair while you can and rest assured you purchased one of the most musical speakers ever designed.
There is a web magazine review that compares the 88s with the C7ES3s. Pay it no mind as it's total hogwash. My conclusion was the polar opposite.
