Description
Rothwell Audio In Line RCA Attenuators (Pair) are designed to resolve a common issue in many hi fi systems, which is excessive gain that makes the volume rise too quickly. If your system reaches high listening levels with the control set at nine or ten o’clock and if fine adjustments at low volume are difficult, these attenuators provide an effective and elegant solution.
By applying a fixed attenuation of 10 dB, they allow the amplifier’s volume control to operate further through its rotational range, improving accuracy and offering better usability. These attenuators are inserted at the amplifier end, between the input sockets and your interconnects, and can be used with both integrated amplifiers and pre power combinations.
They are also fully compatible with systems across a wide price range.
Improved Stereo Stability and More Natural Sound
Using the volume control at the extreme low end can introduce several problems, including channel imbalance, where one channel changes level more quickly than the other. This often causes the stereo image to drift to one side and may make the music sound veiled or lacking in presence. Some users try replacing the volume control, but this rarely solves the underlying issue.
The real cause is excess system gain, which forces the volume pot to operate within a very narrow portion of its range. Rothwell Audio In Line RCA Attenuators address this by reducing the incoming signal before it reaches the volume control, enabling it to function in a more accurate region where channel matching, clarity and musical transparency are at their best.
Standard and Source Versions Explained for Correct Placement
The standard version of these attenuators is designed specifically to be fitted at the amplifier end. They plug into the amplifier’s input sockets and your interconnects are then connected directly into the attenuators, making correct installation straightforward.
They are suitable for both integrated amplifiers and pre-power systems, where gain matching between components may also be required. In addition to the standard version, Rothwell offers a For Source version, which is different in design and intended to be used at the source end.
The For Source attenuators reverse the direction of signal flow, with the input on the male end and the output on the female end, allowing them to be fitted onto the output sockets of CD players and preamps.
This is particularly useful where space behind the equipment is restricted or when DIN connectors are used, as is often the case with Naim systems. Selecting the correct version ensures proper signal direction and optimal performance.
