Description

The Puritan Audio PSM156 Studio Master Purifier is a symmetrically balanced mains purifier with six outputs that are fully independent. Moreover, it has 52 filter elements, as opposed to the 39, with the PSM136. The PSM156 Studio Master Purifier is thought to improve the definition of music as well as giving a more three-dimensional sound stage.

The unit is designed to also remove any noise and interference from the mains supply. Moreover, the mains sinewave is rebalanced so that it symmetrical with no DC component. This prevents transformers from saturating, maintaining their efficiency. Finally, the PSM156 Studio Master Purifier is built protect your valuable audio equipment from mains surges.

Top-of-the-range, noise filtering.

The PSM156 is a step-up from the PSM136 with improved filtering and a rugged, magnetically shielded enclosure. Additionally, the filter circuitry removes and DC from the mains. This stops the toroidal transformers used in most amplifiers from saturating. Furthermore, the wiring is made of OFC copper for low resistance. It is also insulted with PTFE material that is more heat resistant than PVC. Finally, there are two sets of filters, to remove both common mode and differential mode noise.

What is common mode and differential mode noise?

There are two types noise that can be present on the mains supply. Common mode noise is present on both the live and neutral wires. It also flows in the same direction in both wires. Common mode noise is removed by using a toroidal choke with two windings. This is used in conjunction with a capacitor, that shorts any HF noise to earth. Differential mode noise flows in the opposite direction in each wire. This is removed by using a capacitor / inductor combination. The PSM156 uses several different values of capacitors, in a multi-stage filtration process.

About DC blocking

The PSM156 also has DC blocking on all six outputs. DC on the mains is a common problem and is caused by domestic appliances placing an asymmetrical load on the supply. This can distort the sinewave causing the positive and negative half cycles to become uneven. As a result, a small amount of DC will be present. Even a small amount of DC can affect the performance of the toroidal transformers, commonly used in amplifiers. The transformer will saturate affecting its transient response. Transient response refers to how fast the PSU can respond to a sudden current demand.

Why power conditioners?

Interference on the mains, can come from many sources, both inside and outside the home. Outside interference can come from thunderstorms. This is why it is also important to have good surge protection. Moreover, agricultural machinery can put spikes on the mains supply. Secondly house wiring is not shielded and can pick up all kinds of radio and Wi-Fi interference. High frequency noise can also come from poorly shielded switch mode power supplies. Most people will be familiar with the sound a smart meter transmitting to the mobile network, makes on cheap audio systems. The PSM156 will filter out all noise, as well as protect your expensive audio equipment.
