Description
The Pro-Ject T2 Turntable is a mid-priced plug-and-play turntable that comes with a Rainier MM cartridge pre-fitted. The chassis is made of wood and features a heavy glass platter. Moreover, the 9” tonearm is pre-set and ready to use.
Speed selection is easy with a single switch. This variant of the T2 has no built-in phono stage. However, the T2 Super Phono has a premium built-in preamp.
Glass platter and high-precision motor
The glass platter of the Pro-Ject T2 Turntable resists resonances and avoids the problems associated with plastic or steel alternatives. Moreover, the precision speed-controlled motor can be set by a single click of the side-mounted speed control.
There is also an adjustable spring-based anti-skating mechanism. The tonearm tends to pull towards the centre of the record. This can cause excess groove wear and mistracing. As a result, the spring applies a slight counterforce to correct this effect.
One-piece 9” metal tonearm
The longer-than-usual tonearm is made from a single piece of aluminium. This adds rigidity and the tonearm also features low-friction bearings for absolute accuracy. The Pro-Ject T2 Turntable also comes fitted with a Sumiko Rainier MM cartridge.
The Sumiko Rainier MM cartridge.
The Pro-Ject T2 Turntable comes fitted with a Sumiko Rainier MM cartridge. This cartridge is a well-specified unit with a resonance-optimized housing that creates a well-represented soundstage. Clarity is good and the soundstage is broader and rounder than is usual at this price point.
Cartridge types
The Pro-Ject T2 Turntable is pre-fitted with a moving magnet cartridge. However, there are also moving coil cartridges available as an upgrade path. These have a lower output of less than 1mV, as opposed to around 5mV with moving magnet cartridges. The main advantage of moving coil cartridges is lower mass.
This is designed to help with tracking accuracy, especially at high frequencies. Lower mass is achieved by having tiny coils mounted onto the end of the cantilever that holds the stylus. The coils are lighter than the magnet used in moving magnet cartridges.
Phono pre-amps
The Pro-Ject T2 Turntable has no built-in phono preamp allowing for a moving coil cartridge upgrade. However, for users that have an amplifier without a phono stage, the T2 Super Phono version has a built-in moving magnet preamp.
Notably, most amplifiers will have a moving magnet phono stage. Moving coil cartridges will need an additional preamp.
