Description
The Pro-Ject Power Box RS2 Sources Power Supply is a high-quality linear power supply that can drive up to four 20v RS/RS2 devices. These connect via standard mini XLR plugs. Four high-quality cables are included in the package.
The PSU will work with Pro-ject 15V turntables, phono preamps, CD players, DACs, and headphone amplifiers. This upgraded power supply is designed to reduce noise and improve sound quality.
Large toroidal transformer
Linear power supplies need a large transformer. Notably, a toroidal type is fitted to the Pro-Ject Power Box RS2. These emit less magnetic interference. Moreover, linear power supplies do not emit Radio frequency noise, as do switch-mode power supplies.
The PSU has a high power reserve and low impedance. This means that any peak in demand does not cause a voltage drop or increase in noise. As a result, backgrounds are silent.
How does a power supply work?
There are two main types of power supplies. Linear and switch mode. The Pro-Ject Power Box RS2 Sources Power Supply is a linear supply. Linear supplies use a large transformer to reduce the mains voltage to a lower AC voltage.
The mains is connected to the primary winding and the secondary windings are wound over the top. Next, the secondary windings are fed to a rectifier.
Rectification and regulation
The rectifier changes the AC into DC. However, the output is not smooth. As a result, the output is fed to reservoir capacitors that remove any hum or AC component. Lastly, the output voltage has to be regulated.
Otherwise, any increase in load would cause the voltage to drop. This can be done by using regulator ICs or separate transistors. ICs have many internal components. In the case of the Pro-Ject Power Box RS2 Sources Power Supply, these are mounted on a large finned heatsink.
