Description
The PMC Twenty5 22i Speaker is the largest of the stand-mounted designs in the Twenty5i range. Moreover, it has a larger 170mm bass driver and a 19mm soft dome tweeter. The sound is even more natural and realistic due to the Advanced Transmission Line bass system. Also, the power handling has been increased to 200 watts. The speakers can be stand or shelf-mounted and are suitable for medium to large rooms.
Advanced Transmission Line system
PMC speakers are renowned for their natural and realistic sound and the PMC Twenty5 22i Speakers are no exception. This is due to the Advanced Transmission Line (ATL) bass-loading system. Notably, a lined tunnel is used to control the airflow from the back of the bass driver.
This is lined with acoustic materials that absorb all but the ultra-low bass frequencies. These frequencies are then fed out through the front-mounted Laminair port. As a result, the speakers sound larger than they are. Lastly, the bass output is not as dependent on the volume level, giving a balanced sound.
Laminair port
The PMC Twenty5 22i Speaker has a front-mounted Laminair vent. These are specially engineered to enhance bass performance. The aerodynamic shape is inspired by Formula One racing cars. As a result, the shape reduces turbulence and drag. This reduces air noise and gives the bass supreme timing and the ultimate in dynamic range.
Bass and mid-range drivers
PMC has designed the drivers used in the PMC Twenty5 22i Speaker. The 170mm bass driver is made of g-weave glass fibre and is a long throw design. Additionally, it has a cast alloy chassis. Consequently, the sound has an ultra-vivid mid-range clarity. Resin-bonded fibre-glass is used for the cone and it was found that the material is stronger than paper. However, it maintains the same uncoloured sound. Additionally, the magnet and motor system has 80% more power handling than previous versions.
The tweeter
The PMC Twenty5 22i Speakers tweeter is inspired by the top-of-the-line tweeter from the Twenty series. The motor system is ferrofluid cooled and the diameter is 19mm. Additionally, the soft dome is surrounded by a wide dispersion grille. This gives clear high frequencies across a wide listening area.
The crossover
Multi-driver speakers need a crossover to split the audio into bands and provide a flat frequency response. A high pass filter is used to ensure that the correct frequencies go to each driver. The PMC Twenty5 22i Speaker has a computer-designed two-way crossover.
Computer modelling was used along with extensive listening tests. Moreover, military-grade PCBs are used along with thick copper tracks. This reduces resistance and provides more current handling capability. All the inductors and capacitors are the best possible quality, for a long life.
The cabinet
The PMC Twenty5 22i Speakers are the largest speakers in the range that can be bookshelf or stand mounted. The cabinet has been designed using accelerometers. As a result, any panel resonances have been traced and eliminated. Additionally, isolation materials were tested and the cabinet sizes were adjusted for the best performance. Lastly, the stainless steel spike feet can be adjusted from the top.
This combines perfectly with the PMC Twenty5 subwoofer and can also be placed on separate PMC Twenty5 stands for elevation and sound distribution.
