Description
Ortofon’s iconic Concorde-shaped cartridges are now available for the h-fi market. The Ortofon Concorde Music Red MM Phono Cartridge is designed as a plug-and-play unit that can be plugged into tonearms with an SME-style headshell. Formerly only for DJs, the range is similar to the 2M series with some upgrades.
This includes consistent cartridge bodies and a 6mV output as well as lower mass. The Red model is the best value in the range and has a tipped elliptical stylus. The range extends up to the flagship black LVB model.
Tipped elliptical diamond stylus
The Ortofon Concorde Music Red MM Phono Cartridge features a tipped elliptical diamond stylus. This is polished to the highest standards and tracks the groove with precision and accuracy. Ortofon specialises in creating cartridges with an uncoloured sound. Lastly, the Ortofon Concorde Music Red MM Phono Cartridge has an interchangeable stylus.
Moving magnet design
The moving magnet design of the Ortofon Concorde Music Red MM Phono Cartridge uses split pole pins to reduce the eddy current. This has the effect of flattening the frequency response. Moving magnet cartridges have a tiny magnet mounted onto the cantilever that holds the stylus tip.
This sits inside two coils that pick up the groove modulation from either side of the “V” shape, for a stereo output. At around 6mV the output is enough to drive a good range of preamps and amplifiers with built-in phono stages.
Easy mounting
The Ortofon Concorde Music Red MM Phono Cartridge is easy to mount as it has a standard SME headshell. The cartridge weight is optimized for the most common turntables available today.
Stylus types
There is a range of styli used in the Ortofon Concorde range. The styli increase in performance and cost going up the range. The Ortofon Concorde Music Red MM Phono Cartridge is the best-value model and has a tipped elliptical stylus. Tipped, also known as bonded, has a chip of diamond mounted to a metal shaft. They are more durable than a nude tip and are a good compromise between performance and cost.
Cartridge types
The Ortofon Concorde Music Red MM Phono Cartridge is a moving magnet design. There are also moving coil designs that have a lower output. The Concorde range has an output of around 6mV. This is high for an MM cartridge and makes them a versatile choice.
Preamp requirements
MM cartridges such as the Ortofon Concorde Music Red MM Phono Cartridge do not have a line-level output. As a result, they need a phono stage or preamplifier. Some but not all AV receivers and amplifiers will have a phono stage. However separate phono preamps are available from several manufacturers.
Lastly, records are not recorded with a flat frequency response. The bass is cut to reduce overmodulation and the treble is boosted. This is known as the RIAA equalization curve. The preamp reverses this to obtain a flat frequency response.
