Description
The iconic Ortofon Concorde-shaped cartridges formerly only available to DJs can now be bought by audiophiles. There are five cartridges in the range extending up to the black LVB version. The Ortofon Concorde Music Blue MM Phono Cartridge has a nude elliptical diamond stylus and is the second up in performance.
Each Concorde cartridge can be plugged into a standard SME-style headshell. Upgrades over the standard 2M range include a higher 6mV output and low-mass cartridge bodies. Nude tips have lower mass and a better tracking ability.
Nude elliptical diamond stylus
The Ortofon Concorde Music Blue MM Phono Cartridge features a nude elliptical diamond stylus. That is opposed to the bonded type that has a metal shaft, as used by the Red. Nude tips have a lower mass. This improves the tracking capability as well as the responsiveness. Ortofon is renowned for creating cartridges with an uncolored sound. The tips are highly polished and the stylus can be replaced.
Moving magnet design
An upgrade with the Ortofon Concorde Music Blue MM Phono Cartridge is the split pole pin design. This has the effect of reducing the eddy currents in the pickup coils, flattening the frequency response. Notably, moving magnet cartridges have the magnet mounted directly to the cantilever that holds the stylus. The magnet moves inside a pair of coils. The coils convert the groove modulation into an electrical signal. A feature of this unit is the high 6mV output, this will drive virtually any preamp or phono stage.
Easy mounting
The Ortofon Concorde Music Blue MM Phono Cartridge will fit a standard SME tonearm connector. Moreover, the cartridge weight is optimized for most modern turntables. Lastly, the plug-and-play design makes it easy to change between different Concorde models
Stylus types
Various stylus types are used in the Ortofon Concorde range. The Ortofon Concorde Music Blue MM Phono Cartridge has a nude elliptical stylus. While the Concorde Red has a bonded type. Nude types are more expensive to produce. However, they have a lower mass and better tracking capability. Notably, the Concorde Bronze has a nude fine-line diamond stylus. These have even better tracking capability.
Cartridge types
The Ortofon Concorde Music Blue MM Phono Cartridge is a moving magnet design. The other type of cartridge available today uses a moving coil design. These have a much lower output, often less than 1mV. They also need a specialized preamp. Notably, the output of the Concorde range is 6mV making them a versatile choice.
Preamp requirements
The 6mV output of the Ortofon Concorde Music Blue MM Phono Cartridge will drive most phono preamps. Not all amplifiers will have a phono stage. However, stand-alone phono preamps are available from many manufacturers. Additionally, records are recorded with pre-emphasis.
The bass is cut and the treble is boosted. This has the effect of reducing surface noise when the treble is cut during playback. The recording and playback equalization curve was specified by the RIAA many years ago and is used by most preamps.
