Description
The Ortofon Concorde Black MM Phono Cartridge is one step below the flagship black LVB model. The cartridge uses a top-of-the-line Shibata stylus tip for super-accurate tracking. You will hear all of the details, with exceptional high-frequency pickup. The Shibata tip has a larger contact area that reduces wear on both the groove and the stylus. The pickup has also been upgraded with silver plated wire and an optimized body.
Shibata diamond stylus
The fine line Shibata tip fitted to the Ortofon Concorde Black MM Phono Cartridge has an increased contact area. This extracts all of the fine detail in the music. It also tracks high frequencies with ease. The large contact area reduces wear as well as distortion. Lastly, the stylus can be replaced. Shibata styli has a lifespan of around 400 hours.
Upgrades for the Black model
The Ortofon Concorde Black MM Phono Cartridge features a body made from a new material. The Noryl plastic/glass combination reduces resonances and has high rigidity. Moreover, the pickup features spilled pole pins that reduce eddy currents. Another upgrade is the silver-coated wires that have better conductivity. Moving magnet cartridges have a cantilever with a stylus at one end and a tiny magnet at the other. The magnet sits inside two pickup coils that generate the audio signal.
Easy SME mounting
SME tonearms are used by many manufacturers. The Ortofon Concorde Music Black MM Phono Cartridge is compatible with these. Also, the weight is optimized for most modern turntables. The plug-and-play nature of the Concorde range makes changing cartridges easy.
Stylus types
The Concorde range features different stylus tip types. Ranging from bonded elliptical to the flagship Shibata tip with a boron cantilever. Each offers an increase in performance. The Red is fitted with a bonded elliptical tip, which offers the best value. Next up is the Blue with a nude elliptical stylus. The bronze has an upgraded engine while the two top models have a Shibata stylus.
What are the different Cartridge types?
The Concorde range, including the Ortofon Concorde Music Black MM Phono Cartridge, are moving magnet types. They have a relatively high output of around 6mV. This makes them compatible with most phono preamps. However, there is another type of cartridge in use known as a moving coil.
This reverses the aforementioned magnet coil assembly, with the coils mounted onto the cantilever. This reduces the mass for better tracking, however, the output is much lower and they are more expensive. The Concorde range is preferred for the balance between cost and performance.
Preamp requirements
The Concorde range will work with virtually any phono preamp. However, not all amplifiers have a built-in phono stage. However, there are many dedicated phono preamps available. Premium cartridges such as the Ortofon Concorde Music Black MM Phono Cartridge would benefit from a high-end model. Valve front ends are available for a smooth and refined sound.
