Description

Mobile Fidelity Source Point 8 speakers have been designed by renowned designer Andrew Jones. They share the same sonic performance of the acclaimed Source Point 10 speakers but in a smaller package.

Source Point 8 can fit into a smaller space without losing that big satisfying Mobile Fidelity sound. They have all the power you need to rock your world and are very well engineered speakers with excellent performance and good build quality.

The dual concentric driver design gives good bass performance as well as well-dispersed treble. The maximum output power is 150 watts and there are three finishes available - black, white and walnut real wood veneer.

8” concentric drivers

Source Point 8 features a dual concentric driver. Here both the woofer and tweeter are in one unit. This creates a point source system that has impeccable control and precise imaging. The woofer cone acts as a waveguide for the tweeter, this maximises the tweeters efficiency and directivity. The sound is clean with lots of punch and liveliness.

Twin drive magnet system

Mobile Fidelity have deveoped a twin drive high-flux neodymium magnet system. The Source Point 8’s motor design not only optimises the frequency response but also minimises distortion. This means that the frequency response is flat with no spurious resonances. The magnetic field is kept symmetrical. This creates low intermodulation distortion and a pure accurate sound.

How do coned loudspeakers work?

Loudspeakers work by converting electrical energy into mechanical energy. The mechanical energy moves a cone and this in consequence moves air and generates sound. Cones can be made of paper or more advanced materials such as carbon fibre. A coil is used to move the cone. This is mounted inside a magnet. When an electric current is passed through the coil it is repelled or attracted to the magnet. producing audio. The magnet, nowadays, is usually a permanent type. In vintage radios, it was an electromagnet driven from the power supply. There are also more advanced designs that use multiple cones, such as Source Point 8.

Concentric speaker design

Concentric speakers have complex design characteristics. The Source Point 8 uses a two-way concentric design. With these, there is a trade off between the required woofer excursion and variations in the frequency response of the tweeter. High frequency sounds from the tweeter encounter the woofer surround. This is usually a half roll shape. Consequently, this interferes with the direct sound from the tweeter, causing dips and peaks in the response. Source Point 8 mitigates this effect by using a low profile surround as well as a relatively large cone, to reduce the excursion.

Vented box, bass reflex designs

The Source Point 8 is a vented box design. In that it has a bass port. These are used to enhance the bass response of a speaker. The resonant frequency of the port is designed so that it lies below the natural resonant frequency of the bass driver. This creates two resonate frequencies. That of the driver and that of the port. The phases of the two resonances interact. This has the effect of boosting the bass.

Who are Mobile Fidelity

MoFi electronics is the electronics division of Mobile Fidelity Labs. They make a range of high-end speakers, Turntables and cartridges. However, they are primarily known for their audiophile recordings on SACD and vinyl. Mobile Fidelity was founded in 1977 and began by issuing audiophile recordings using state-of-the art technologies. This included half speed mastered original master recordings and ultra high quality records.
