Description
The MJ Acoustics Masterclass Ascot Subwoofer is a high-end subwoofer with a linear 200-watt amplifier. This compact unit packs in a lot of power and performance, without taking up too much space. The 10” driver has a long throw that moves masses of air and uses high-capacity capacitors to deliver tight controlled bass.
There are also many user settings such as the variable crossover as well as phase control and LFE bypass. Lastly, the quality cabinet is built to last and the unit features advanced protection systems.
Class A/B linear amplifier
A high-end feature is the 200-watt linear amplifier. Normally subwoofers use Class D amplifiers that are more efficient and demand less power. However linear amplifiers can offer less distortion but need a large power supply. As a result, the MJ Acoustics Masterclass Ascot Subwoofer features large-capacity capacitors to provide a large power reserve. Movie explosions that cause large transients are no problem.
10” high excursion driver
The MJ Acoustics Masterclass Ascot Subwoofer features a long throw 10” woofer. Having a long throw means that it can move more air for earth-shattering bass. The basket is made of heavy steel and there are dual high-intensity full saturation magnets. Lastly, there is an extended pole piece and a mass-balanced cone assembly to reduce distortion.
Good connectivity
Another feature not normally seen on lesser subwoofers is the Neutrik speakon speaker level input. This can be used with legacy amplifiers that do not have a subwoofer output. Next, there are two line-level RCA inputs along with an RCA LFE input. There is also an LFE/ centre input.
Controllability
The MJ Acoustics Masterclass Ascot Subwoofer has good controllability with an adjustable crossover frequency, from 20Hz to 120 Hz along with a 200Hz bypass. The frequency response is 13Hz to 200 Hz. There is also a phase control.
MJ Acoustics Smart Remote App
An app is available from MJ Acoustics that can be used to control the MJ Acoustics Masterclass Ascot Subwoofer. This can be installed on Apple and Android devices and connects directly to the subwoofer by using Bluetooth. You can then control most of the features such as the crossover frequency and phasing. Ther is also an auto on/off circuit and a 12v trigger input
Connecting a subwoofer
Most modern AV receivers will have one or more subwoofer outputs that can be connected to the line-level inputs of the MJ Acoustics Masterclass Ascot Subwoofer. However, for music-only amplifiers that do not have a subwoofer output you can use the speaker-level inputs.
These are usually connected to the second set of speaker outputs that many older amplifiers have. Next, the crossover frequency is set so that the subwoofer does not overpower your main speakers. The phase switch should be set to match your man speakers. This can be done by ear. If the phase is wrong the bass will be reduced rather than boosted.
What is LFE?
Movies are recorded with an LFE or Low-Frequency effects channel, this is in addition to the usual subwoofer output. The MJ Acoustics Masterclass Ascot Subwoofer has dedicated inputs for LFE. LFE can also be switched out if required.
