Description
The Leak Sandwich 250 Bookshelf Speakers descend from the original Leak Sandwich speaker. This iconic design first appeared in 1961 and the new version features all new materials. The speaker features three drivers and is intended to match the Leak range of vintage-styled audio units.
The name “sandwich” refers to the design of the bass and midrange units with a polystyrene core between two aluminium layers. The woofer is a 280mm unit and the midrange is 108mm in diameter. There is also a 30mm textile dome tweeter and the maximum power handling is 250 Watts.
The Sandwich Bass and midrange drivers
The original sandwich design used a polystyrene core covered with two aluminium foil layers. This construction was both light and stiff and tended to reduce distortion. Moreover, the sound was more natural and accurate.
However, materials technology moves on and the new Leak Sandwich 250 Bookshelf Speakers use an aluminium skin bonded to a core of aircraft-grade polymethacrylimide (PMI) structural foam. The result is a very rigid structure with no mechanical breakup.
Three-way design
The Leak Sandwich 250 Bookshelf Speakers feature three drivers, two of which are foamcore types. At 65cm high, on the plinth, these are substantial speakers. The large 280mm bass unit has plenty of power and the 108mm midrange provides accurate voice delivery.
The tweeter is a 30mm textile domed design with a wide dispersion. Dedicated floor stands are available separately.
High-quality cabinet
The cabinet of the Leak Sandwich 250 Bookshelf Speakers is made of two layers of different wooden materials. This is also a sandwich construction, bonded by a special type of glue. The inner layer of high-density particle board is bonded to an outer layer of MDF.
As a result, the cabinet is very rigid and resists resonances. Moreover, there is also spot bracing as well as a front and rear brace that emulates the original design. Next, two rear ports improve the air flow resulting in powerful bass.
Finally, the cabinet features a real walnut veneer as well as an aluminium insert around the edge of the front baffle.
Tweeter rear chamber and crossover
The resonant frequency of the Leak Sandwich 250 Bookshelf Speakers tweeters is reduced by the use of a rear chamber. As a result, the resonant frequency is lower than the crossover frequency. This provides better integration between the three drive units. As a result, music has more detail and a more accurate frequency response.
Who are Leak?
Leak pioneered Hi-Fi in 1945 when they released one of the first low-distortion amplifiers. That was the iconic Leak Point One. Moreover, Leak also developed the Sandwich method of construction for speaker cones. Notably, Leak ceased production in the 1970s.
However, a collectors market for Leak equipment had developed and it was decided to re-introduce a range of vintage-styled units in 2020. These have all new electronics based on classic designs. The range includes a CD player as well as integrated amplifiers.
