Description
The Leak Sandwich 150 Bookshelf Speakers are inspired by the classic Leak Sandwich speaker that debuted in 1961. This 2 way stand mount speaker is designed to match the Leak range of vintage-styled audio units. The range was reintroduced in 2020 with all new electronics.
The sandwich name is derived from the bass/midrange driver's construction. Notably, the woofer is a 170mm unit and the tweeter is a 30mm textile domed design. Lastly, the cabinet design mimics the original look and uses all modern materials.
The Sandwich Bass/midrange driver
The original Sandwich bass/midrange driver was made of a “sandwich” of polystyrene foam placed between two sheets of aluminium foil. This was a light yet stiff construction that reduced distortion. As a result, the sound was more natural and accurate.
The modern version uses an aluminium skin bonded to a core of aircraft-grade polymethacrylimide (PMI) structural foam. This provides a very rigid structure.
Two-way design
The Leak Sandwich 150 Bookshelf Speakers are a two-way design and will fit in most rooms at a height of 41.5cm. They are stand-mounted and dedicated floor stands are available separately. The tweeter is a 30mm textile domed unit and the mid/bass driver is 170mm in diameter. The maximum power handling is 150 Watts.
High-quality cabinet
The Leak Sandwich 150 Bookshelf Speakers cabinet is also made of a sandwich construction. A special type of glue bonds two layers. An inner layer of high-density particle board and an outer layer of MDF. Both layers help to damp resonances.
There is also spot bracing and a front and rear brace that emulates the original design. Moreover, two rear ports increase the airflow and boost the bass. Lastly, the cabinet is covered in real Walnut veneer and there is an aluminium insert around the edge of the front baffle.
Tweeter rear chamber and crossover
The tweeter of the Leak Sandwich 150 Bookshelf Speaker has a rear chamber fitted, this absorbs the output from the rear of the device. The chamber is designed to reduce the resonant frequency of the tweeter.
As a result, resonance is taken below the crossover frequency allowing better integration with the bass/midrange driver. This adds detail to the music and smooths out the treble response.
Who are Leak?
Leak was one of the first companies to make a low distortion amplifier, with the Leak Point One in 1945. Another major innovation was the sandwich loudspeaker cone as described above. They ceased production in the 1970s. However, the range was relaunched in 2020 with all-new electronics. The units also maintain a vintage look.
