Description
The KEF Q7 Meta Speakers are the smallest of the floor standers and replace the Q550. They feature KEF’s Uni-Q driver along with two aluminium coned bass units. The Uni-Q driver is a two-in-one unit with a central tweeter and a surrounding midrange unit.
This creates a single-point source for widely dispersed sound. Moreover, the unit is fitted with KEF’s MAT technology which reduces the sound from the back of the tweeter by 99%. Next, there is an updated crossover and spiked feet are fitted to the cabinet that is available in three finishes.
12th generation Uni-Q with MAT™ driver
The Uni-Q driver, as fitted to the KEF Q7 Meta Speakers, is now in its 12th generation and the latest upgrade is the MAT sound absorption technology. The tweeter and midrange are mounted in one unit.
The central tweeter and midrange unit provide a single-point source that creates a wide listening area. The layout also reduces timing or phase errors. Phase errors can make the sound muddy as the sounds arrive at slightly different times.
What is Metamaterial Absorption Technology (MAT™)?
The sound coming from the rear of a driver can cause interference. This is especially the case where the drivers are mounted on top of each other as with the Uni-Q driver. Consequently, KEF developed MAT.
Metamaterial Absorption technology absorbs 99% of the sound. As a result, the sound is clean and clear. Other absorption materials only achieve around a 60% reduction. The MAT material has a maze-like structure that dissipates sound.
Aluminium cone LF drivers
The KEF Q7 Meta Speakers are fitted with two aluminium coned bass drivers for powerful bass. Both units are long throw and the aluminium cones are strong and will not absorb moisture. Additionally, they can sound highly detailed but the breakup frequency handling needs careful crossover design.
Enhanced crossover
The crossover in the KEF Q7 Meta Speakers has an enhanced design for aluminium coned bass drivers. The signal path has been fine-tuned to ensure a clean sound and reduced distortion. The crossover splits the audio band into three parts for feeding to each driver.
A set of filters are created that are made up of inductors and capacitors. Capacitors once had a paper dielectric that deteriorated over time. However, polypropylene types are now used and will last a lifetime.
Create a home cinema system with the Q Meta range from KEF
The Q meta range is designed to create home cinema systems as well as to be used for standard stereo systems. There are two floor standers in the range the Q7 and Q11. These can be used as the left and right front speakers. Moreover, the Q1 or Q3 bookshelf speakers can be used for the side or rear surround speakers.
In addition, there is a dedicated centre speaker with the Q4. Lastly, for Dolby Atmos systems there is the Q8 upward firing model. KEF also produces subwoofers in the Kube range.
