Description
The KEF Ci3160RLM-THX In Wall Speaker is part of the Extreme Home Theatre Range of Architectural speakers from KEF. This is one of the larger units with the highest output. Moreover, they are THX-certified Ultra, for the best possible performance. The 350-watt power handling is achieved by using four drivers, there are two 160mm bass units along with a 160mm uni-Q driver. This driver combines a 160mm midrange driver with a 25mm MAT tweeter in one unit.
Uni-Q driver
The uni-Q driver used by the KEF Ci3160RLM-THX In-Wall Speaker is a proprietary system, where the midrange unit cone and tweeter are mounted in a single unit. Moreover, to prevent any mutual interference, the tweeter is backed by an acoustically absorbent material known as MAT. Metamaterial Absorption Technolgy. Additionally, the two 160mm bass drivers feature an aluminum basket.
MAT tweeter
The tweeter is MAT-backed and produces a crisp natural sound by eliminating 99% of the unwanted sound from the rear of the tweeter. Metamaterial is a synthetic material that cannot be found in nature. Natural materials are often used in speakers to absorb sound however how they behave acoustically, cannot be finely controlled.
As a result, Metamaterial was developed that can be fine-tuned to behave as needed. The KEF-developed metamaterial has been designed to be an acoustical black hole where no sound can escape. The material is mathematically optimized to absorb sound at a particular frequency.
Three way crossover
The overall frequency response of the KEF Ci3160RLM-THX In Wall Speaker is 33Hz to 45 kHz. This is wider than most speakers and there are two crossover points at 640 Hz and 2.6kHz. The crossover splits the audio frequency into bands, for feeding to each individual driver. Capacitors and inductors are used to create filters. The components used are of a high quality. The capacitors need to be stable to prevent frequency drift and to have a long life.
Why architectural speakers?
Architectural speakers, such as the KEF Ci3160RLM-THX In Wall Speaker, are designed to be embedded in a wall and as such do not have an enclosure. They are intended for high-end home cinema systems. Architectural speakers are less obtrusive and can be optimized for the room. They are also ideal if you have limited floor space.
Also, there are now sophisticated home cinema systems, such as Dolby Atmos, that are designed to create a 3D sound space by using ceiling speakers. Architectural speakers do not have an enclosure and are designed to use the wall space as the enclosure. Lastly, architectural speakers will not interfere with the room décor as they become virtually invisible.
