Description
Icon Audio MFV 3 II is a well designed efficient loudspeaker, from the "Made For Valve" series, with a more constant impedance which gives a vastly improved performance in terms of volume level, special image and more solid controlled bass.
Crossover
A simple yet effective crossover ensures that the signal transfer from the amplifier has the minimum impact in order that the amplifier can “see” the speaker drive units clearly without excessive distortion. Icon Audio valve amplifiers have a reputation for excellent performance and build quality but we are aware that they are not always matched to ideal loudspeakers thereby not optimising the sound.
Easy to Drive
The ease of driving means that as little as 15 watts will achieve an excellent volume ideal for large orchestral works in a large room. The MFV 3 MKII is also an ideal partner to lower powered SE valve, transistor or hybrid amplifiers. 300B 9w SE amplifiers, for example, have a breathtaking immediacy and dynamics.
Customer Reviews
A few days later, the speakers arrived, the Icon Audio MFV 3 MkII, vinyl-wrapped version. First impression: they’re surprisingly heavy. Extremely dense and solid. The vinyl finish is good quality, but if you have a bit of extra budget, I’d recommend saving up for the veneered ‘Super’ version, which I imagine has a superior finish.
I paired them with my Naim Nait 50 amplifier, and once everything was set up, I was blown away. These speakers sound fantastic. What immediately stood out was the midrange - clear, rich and expressive. Treble is articulate without being harsh, and the bass is deep and punchy, never boomy or loose. I suspect the dense cabinets help keep the low end tight and well-controlled.
They also project a large, immersive soundstage with a strong centre image. Their overall character is laid-back and easy to listen to, but not at all dull or muddy. If I had to compare them to something familiar, they remind me of a more refined version of the Klipsch RP600M: similar bass weight, but with smoother treble and more forward mids. None of that scooped-out feeling you get with the Klipsch.
They also work surprisingly well in small rooms. They’re very efficient, so even when listening at low volumes with a low-powered amp, they remain dynamic and expressive. You get all the detail and character without having to turn them up loud -which means your neighbours are unlikely to complain.
In short, these are seriously impressive speakers. If you’re on the fence, I’d say go for it.
