Description
The Cyrus 40 CD Player is an entirely new design for the 40 Series. Cyrus uses “Servo Evolution” to extract every musical nuance from the data. As a result noise levels are very low and musicality is good. Next, a powerful top-of-the-line ESS DAC is fitted and the power supply has been upgraded.
The digital section has its own supply while nine independent regulators supply the rest of the system. There is also an amplifier, PSU upgrade, and Streamer available in the 40 Series.
New 40 series DAC
A new 40 Series DAC is fitted to the Cyrus 40 CD Player. The ESS ES9039Q2M DAC chipset uses a powerful processor to create a very accurate output. The CD player is slot-loading and does not have a drawer. The mechanism has an accurate servo and solidly locks the disc to prevent jitter. Jitter can make the sound fuzzy and consists of tiny timing errors in the data. This can be caused by disc wobbles or speed variations.
Upgraded power supply
The power supply in the Cyrus 40 CD Player has been upgraded to deal with the complex range of signals in a CD player. These range from servo circuits to digital and analogue processing sections. Audio stages can interact, and the power supply needs to be well-shielded and have a well-regulated output.
To prevent interaction the digital circuits have their own power supply while nine regulators take care of the rest of the system.
Connectivity
The Cyrus 40 CD Player has two analogue outputs as well as an optical and coaxial output. The optical output can be used to provide a pure signal to the Cyrus 40 Amp Integrated Amplifier also in the range. Moreover, there is a multipin socket to connect the Cyrus 40 PSU upgrade unit. Lastly, a dedicated streamer is available in the Cyrus 40 ST.
What is in a CD player?
CDs remain popular and the sound is not compressed. CD audio is sampled at 44.1kHz, 16bit and this limits the upper frequency to 21kHz. However modern DACs can use oversampling to improve this. There are also HD SACDs that use DSD encoding. The CD player itself has to read the pits on the disc accurately.
This needs a laser that is well-focused onto the disc. Unlike LPs CDs do not have a constant speed, They speed up or slow down depending on the position of the laser. This is known as constant linear velocity (CLV).
Various servo circuits are used to focus the laser as well as control the turntable motor speed. There is also a servo that runs the sled that holds the optical assembly. This moves the laser across the disc from the inside out. When a disc is placed in the player the laser first does a focus search and then reads the Table Of Contents (TOC) to get the track information.
In the Cyrus 40 CD Player, all of the servo circuits have their own PSU regulator to prevent mutual interference.
