Worth every penny
It’s taken a while for me to move from moving magnet to moving coil. Prior to purchasing the Audio Technica AT-OC9XSH, I was blown over by how good the Audio Technica VM-95SH moving magnet cartridge was, given its reasonable price. I won a 1983 Pioneer PL-640 turntable on eBay for £49.00 in march 2026 which still had its original Pioneer PN-5 MC moving Coil Cartridge fitted. After some refurbishment of the PL-640 (including replacing the capacitors and phono lead), I plugged it into my refurbished Harman Kardon HK-990 (which has an audiophile quality phono stage) and the sound produced by the 1983 moving coil cartridge was so much more detailed than the VM-95SH, but lacking some bass. So that was the decider to buy the AT-OC9XSH. And boy it was worth it, the sound stage and channel separation is amazing as the bass and I’m hearing so much more detail on vinyl that I have been playing since the 1980’s. Currently playing Mike Oldfield’s 1982 album, Crises, and I’m hearing so much more detail then before and I’m still running in the cartridge, It’s just going to get better. At £520 this is a bargain and probably the best choice for entry into the world of Moving Coil cartridges.
