Description
ATC SCM50A SL Tower Speakers, active version of the passive SCM50PSLT, uses the SM75-150 S Soft Dome Mid driver and features the latest 234mm SL Spec Bass driver.
It uses a massive ATC motor assembly and a 350 watt class AB tri-amp pack, active filters and overload protection. This results in a wide, even dispersion for pin-point imaging.
Active Benefits
The drive units and internal amplifiers are precisely tailored to perfectly match each other ensuring best possible performance. In comparison, a passive speaker only has a general design because it is not amplifier specific neither is the amplifier optimised to the speaker.
SCM50A has an amplifier per drive-unit and an active filter trumping a passive filter which is energy inefficient even when speakers are bi-amplified.
ATC 3 Way
ATC drivers are manufactured in house to exacting tolerances and are legendary for their many design innovations. The hand-wound short voice coils use only high density edge wound flat OFC wire and operate in a precision long magnetic gap.
Front and rear magnetic venting not only reduces airflow and noise, but increases power handling and long term reliability. Meanwhile, massive motor assemblies offer no- compromise optimisation for each voice coil diameter.
Soft Dome Technology
ATC SCM50A uses unique SM-150S Soft Dome technology which was developed by ATC in 1976 and revolutionised professional studio monitoring. Remarkably it remains the only mid-range device capable of giving ultimate performance.
Super Linear Technology found in all Tower models is equally groundbreaking and combats the detrimental effects of magnetic hysteresis reducing the production of distortion in drive units.
ATC's SL drives are unique not only in their ability to accurately reproduce piano, but also the precise manner in which they articulate voices. This is hardly surprising given the reduction of third harmonic distortion by 10-15 dB between 100Hz and 3kHz.
