Description

To celebrate ATC’s 50th anniversary an upgraded subwoofer has been released. The ATC C4 SUB Mk2 Limited Edition Subwoofer is designed to go with the SCM20ASL Limited Edition Speakers. The subwoofer features a matching gloss blue cabinet and leather upholstered baffle as well as silver anodized components.

The design is built without compromise and offers new standards of bass clarity for movies and music. This subwoofer is made in England and also features outputs so that subwoofers can be daisy chained or active speakers connected directly to the subwoofer. The ATC c4 Sub Mk2 is limited to 20.

300 watt class A/B amplifier

The ATC C4 SUB Mk2 Limited Edition Subwoofer features a 300-watt MOSFET Class A/B amplifier for plenty of power. There is also adjustable gain as well as a low pass filter with four settings. Moreover, there are polarity and phase settings. Unusually Class D is not used for this premium unit. Two XLR line-level connectors are provided for the inputs one for each stereo channel.

Balanced XLR connections are preferred, however converter cables are available with an RCA connector on one end. Balanced connectors work by having three conductors per channel. One has a positive signal while the other has a negative signal. When these out-of-phase signals are combined at the subwoofer the cable tends to cancel out any noise.

Why a subwoofer?

Smaller bookshelf speakers often have limited bass response, hence the need for a subwoofer. Moreover, movie soundtracks are mixed with a subwoofer output in mind. Additionally, more advanced AV receivers will also have an LFE or Low-Frequency Effects channel so that two subwoofers are used.

The ATC C4 SUB Mk2 Limited Edition Subwoofer has line-level inputs intended for AV receivers with subwoofer outputs. Older amplifiers may not have these outputs. However, subwoofers with line-level inputs are available.

Using a subwoofer

There are various settings that need to be calibrated before using a subwoofer. The input is line level and the subwoofer outputs of an AV receiver should be used. Firstly the input level is set. This should be set to 0dB if both inputs are used. It can then be adjusted so that the bass does not overpower the main speakers at normal listening levels.

The polarity setting is used to correct the polarity of the input signal. When set to - the output will be the reverse polarity of the input. The phase adjustment is used to compensate for phase shifts between the subwoofer and the main speakers and can be set by ear. Lastly, the low pass filter is set to match the cut-off frequency of the main speakers.

Subwoofer positioning

Subwoofer placement is important to prevent booming. The room can act as a filter affecting the sound. Room modes can cause uneven frequency response with either too much or too little bass at the listening position. As a result, try to avoid placing the subwoofer in corners or mid-way along parallel walls.
