Description
The Thorens TD 1601 Turntable with TP160 Tonearm represents a refined and carefully considered evolution of one of the most celebrated turntable designs in analogue history. Drawing clear inspiration from the legendary TD 160, the TD 1601 preserves the core philosophy of a suspended subchassis while introducing modern engineering solutions.
Its classic solid wooden plinth, combined with a precision two-part machined aluminum platter and internally guided belt drive, reflects Thorens’ long-standing commitment to mechanical excellence. This turntable is designed to deliver exceptional musical accuracy while remaining visually timeless.
By blending heritage styling with contemporary technology, the TD 1601 offers vinyl enthusiasts a turntable that respects tradition while meeting the expectations of today’s high-end analogue systems.
Advanced Subchassis and Drive System Engineering
At the heart of the Thorens TD 1601 Turntable with TP160 Tonearm is an advanced subchassis system designed to isolate the record and tonearm from external vibration. Three adjustable conical springs support the subchassis from below, allowing it to rest securely rather than hang from the top plate.
A tensioned steel thread running from the motor pulley axis to the platter bearing prevents lateral movement and ensures controlled, piston-like vertical motion. The electronically controlled AC synchronous motor drives a heavy inner platter and a precisely seated outer aluminum platter via a ground belt.
Power is supplied by the external TPN 1600 linear power supply with a high-performance toroidal transformer, ensuring excellent speed stability and consistent musical timing.
TP160 Tonearm as Standard Equipment
Supplied as standard, the TP160 tonearm is a major highlight of the Thorens TD 1601 Turntable with TP160 Tonearm. Developed by renowned designer Helmut Thiele, this 9-inch J-shaped tonearm takes inspiration from classic studio designs. It features an ultra-precise knife-edge bearing for horizontal movement, with magnetic stabilization to prevent unwanted wobble and ensure accurate groove tracking.
The aluminum arm tube is fitted with a detachable SME headshell connector, allowing easy cartridge changes and broad compatibility. Adjustable azimuth, vertical tracking angle, and spring based anti skating provide precise setup options. A two-part counterweight system allows accurate balancing of cartridges weighing up to 30 grams, making the TP160 a versatile and genuinely high-end tonearm.
True Balanced Output and Intelligent Convenience
The Thorens TD 1601 Turntable with TP160 Tonearm offers both standard RCA outputs and true balanced XLR connections. Since phono signals require significant amplification and are highly sensitive to electrical interference, balanced output provides a major advantage when used with moving coil cartridges and compatible phono preamplifiers.
This professional connection standard helps achieve the lowest possible noise and highest signal purity. In addition to its sonic strengths, the TD 1601 introduces patented convenience features rarely found in high-end subchassis turntables. A motorized electronic tonearm lift allows smooth raising and lowering at the touch of a button, while a touchless optical shut-off mechanism automatically stops the platter and lifts the arm at the end of a record.
Built for Long-Term Analogue Enjoyment
Every detail of the Thorens TD 1601 Turntable with TP160 Tonearm is designed to support long-term, high-performance vinyl playback. The platter and tonearm bearings are mounted on a solid aluminum plate for added rigidity and stability, while resonance-damping materials are used throughout the structure to suppress unwanted vibration.
Electronic speed selection supports both 33â…“ and 45 rpm playback with precision. Weighing 11 kilograms and supplied with an acrylic dust cover, the TD 1601 feels substantial and carefully engineered. Finished in black high gloss or walnut high gloss with a triCom top board, it combines elegant aesthetics with serious mechanical performance, making it a compelling choice for dedicated vinyl enthusiasts.
