Description

The PulseEight Neo X SR Video Matrix is the flagship of the PulseEight Neo range of video switchers. It has 6 HDMI inputs along with 4 HDBaseT outputs and 2 HDMI outputs. It also has six audio breakout connections. Moreover, it has greater bandwidth and 8K capability, compared to the Neo 6A.

The bandwidth has been increased to 18Gbps and the unit is fully compatible with the latest 4K sources. Moreover, it comes with 4 PoH receivers to be used with the HDBaseT system, more on this below. Lastly, the unit is also EDID capable.

What is a video matrix?

A video matrix, such as the PulseEight Neo X SR Video Matrix, is used for distributing video sources in a residence. There are usually several HDMI inputs for connecting to 4K or 8K sources. These can be Blu-ray players, game consoles, and the like. There are also several HDMI outputs for feeding to different display devices such as TVs and projectors.

The key point is that any source can be sent to any display device in any room. Another issue is range. HDMI has limited range so HDBaseT is used for connecting displays that are up to 40 metres away. However, first, let's look at the HDMI format.

About HDMI

The PulseEight Neo X SR Video Matrix has six HDMI inputs and two outputs.HDMI is an acronym for High Definition Multimedia interface. The system has been around since 2002 and replaced the old analogue Scart connector. HDMI has been upgraded several times and can now be used for 8k video at 60Hz.

Most video sources are now connected via HDMI. These can be Blu-ray players, game consoles, or laptops/PCs. Display devices such as TVs and projectors are also connected using HDMI. However, HDMI is meant for use in the same room. Therefore HDBaseT is used for sending video and audio over longer ranges.

What is HDBaseT?

HDBaseT uses cabling and connectors that are similar to the ones used by standard home networking Ethernet systems. The range is up to 40 metres with the PulseEight Neo X SR Video Matrix. Notably, the six HDMI inputs send the source signal back out using the six HDBaseT outputs, giving a total of eight display connections. The signal is then sent down the Cat5e cable to a remote “receiver box” that converts the HDBaseT signal back into the HDMI format. The cable also carries communication protocols such as CEC.

What is HDMI CEC

CEC is an acronym for Consumer Electronics Control. It is used to establish two-way communication between a display device such as a TV and a source such as a Blu-ray player. In this way your TV remote can control some of the functionality of your Blu-ray player. As a result, less remotes are needed. Moreover, modern TV remotes and TVs that have CEC enabled will have a source button that allows you to select the source as well.

Audio breakout

Another feature of the PulseEight Neo X SR Video Matrix is audio breakout. Normally the audio signal is locked up in the HDMI cable and not accessible however the PulseEight Neo X SR Video Matrix has six audio breakout connections. There are both analogue and optical digital outputs. These can be connected to external amplifiers and DACs.

The HDMI formats support many audio formats including Dolby Digital, DTD, and DSD. lastly, HDMI can also send audio back the other way from a TV for example. This is known as ARC, Audio Return Channel.
