Description
The Pro-Ject Pre Box S2 Digital 2023 Pre Amplifier is a micro preamplifier with top-of-the-line DAC chips and MQA support. It is an upgraded version of the classic Pre Box S2 Digital. Firstly, the power supply has been redesigned and has increased isolation from PC USB noise.
There is also a more accurate clock, for reduced jitter, and a more efficient power supply. This is useful for mobile use. Lastly, the output stage power has been boosted for better compatibility with low-impedance headphones and less distortion.
Upgraded internal power supply design
The Power supplies to the clock, DACs, and analogue stages have been enhanced. Now, in the Pro-Ject Pre Box S2 Digital 2023 Pre Amplifier, noise from the PC USB line has been reduced. Moreover, the output frequency response is wider and flatter.
Dual mono DAC
The Pro-Ject Pre Box S2 Digital 2023 Pre Amplifier features a Dual mono high-end, ESS, Sabre ESS9038 DAC. This forms the heart of the unit and can handle DSD64, DSD128, DSD256 & DSD512 (DoP, DSD512 native) Up to 24bit/192kHz. Lastly, there are 7 selectable filter settings. Using two DACs improves channel separation and lowers distortion.
Connectivity
There is a 6.3mm output for headphones, on the front of the Pro-Ject Pre Box S2 Digital 2023 Pre Amplifier. Additionally, there is a variable output RCA connection on the back. Digital inputs include USB as well as an optical and a coaxial input.
New master audio clocks

The headphone amplifier in the Pro-Ject Pre Box S2 Digital 2023 Pre Amplifier now uses 12% less power. It also offers a higher operating current. This gives less distortion with low-impedance headphones. Additionally, the lower power draw for mobile use is a bonus. Also, an external 5v PSU is provided. The sound quality is consequently boosted by the new design. Lastly, the quality housing is made of rigid aluminium for a long life.
A couple of use cases
The Pro-Ject Pre Box S2 Digital 2023 Pre Amplifier is a versatile unit and can be used with or without a streamer. For example, a PC or laptop can be used as the source, connected via USB. Alternatively, the Stream Box S2 ultra can be used, and connected via USB. The streamer will then connect via WIFI. Both setups will need a power amplifier that is connected to the RCA outputs. A remote control is provided that can control the volume as well as other functions.
