Description

The KEF Q11 Meta Speakers are the flagship floor standers in the eight-strong Q Meta range. They have three aluminium coned bass units as well as a two-way Uni-Q driver for the tweeter and mid-range units. The Uni-Q driver has been upgraded with MAT. Metamaterial Absorption technology.

MAT absorbs 99% of the sound coming from the rear of the drivers. This reduces distortion and provides a smoother sound. Moreover, the crossover has been upgraded and the well-braced cabinet is supplied with spiked feet for isolation.

12th generation Uni-Q with MAT™ driver

The Uni-Q driver fitted to the KEF Q11 Meta Speakers is now in its 12th generation. This complex unit is actually two drivers in one. With a centrally mounted tweeter placed over a midrange unit.

This acts as a single-point source and helps to eliminate timing errors. Most speakers have the midrange and tweeter some way apart and this causes the sound from each to arrive at slightly different times causing timing or phase errors.

What is Metamaterial Absorption Technology (MAT™)?

All of the Q Meta range including the KEF Q11 Meta Speakers are fitted with MAT technology. This is especially important when the drivers sit on top of each other, as with the Uni-Q driver. To prevent interference with the midrange unit the tweeter is fitted with a maze-like structure that absorbs 99% of the sound coming from the rear.

Aluminium cone LF drivers

Three aluminium coned bass drivers are fitted to the KEF Q11 Meta Speakers for punchy low-frequency performance. The long-throw aluminium cones do not absorb moisture and are more durable than paper cones. Moreover, they are thought to produce more detail in the music. However, the crossover needs careful design to get the best from aluminium cones.

Enhanced crossover

The crossover in the KEF Q11 Meta Speakers has been designed for Aluminium coned drivers. The signal path has been simulated and fine-tuned by ear. As a result, the sound is clean and has low distortion.

Crossovers are used to split the audio frequency range into three bands in the case of the KEF Q11 Meta. The crossover frequencies are chosen to match the drivers and provide a flat overall frequency response. Capacitors and inductors are used. Modern polypropylene capacitors are designed for a long life.

Create a home cinema system with the Q Meta range from KEF

The KEF Q11 Meta Speakers can be used as part of a home cinema system. In fact, there is also a dedicated centre speaker in the range as well as an upward-firing Dolby Atmos speaker. For example, a 5.1 system comprises a left and right front pair of speakers (Q7 or Q11) as well as a centre speaker (Q4).

There are also two rear surround speakers (Q1 or Q3). The .1 indicates a subwoofer and this could be from the KEF Cube range. Lastly, for Dolby Atmos systems the upward-firing Q8 is available.
