Description
The Mission 778S Streamer represents a new chapter for the brand, bringing high-performance network audio into a compact and beautifully styled chassis. Designed to match the acclaimed Mission 778X amplifier, it also partners effortlessly with a wide range of hi fi systems from other manufacturers.
Despite its modest size, the 778S is packed with advanced streaming technology, a high-quality digital to analogue converter, and extensive connectivity options. Its symmetrical front panel layout with twin rotary controls and a clear OLED display delivers an intuitive and elegant user experience.
Balanced XLR and RCA outputs allow seamless integration with analogue amplifiers, while multiple digital outputs make it ideal for use with external DACs. A built-in headphone amplifier also allows it to operate as a complete personal listening system. Versatile, refined, and musically expressive, the 778S brings true high-end streaming within easy reach.
Powered by Silent Angel Streaming Technology
To achieve outstanding streaming performance, Mission partnered with Silent Angel, a specialist renowned for its stable and high-quality network audio platforms. Silent Angel technology forms the foundation of the Mission 778S Streamer, providing exceptional reliability, speed, and sound quality across all streaming methods.
A custom version of Silent Angel’s streaming engine is integrated into Mission’s own circuitry, driven by powerful ARM Cortex A72 and A53 multicore processors. Control is handled through a refined app based on Silent Angel’s VitOS software, available for both iOS and Android, offering smooth operation and intuitive navigation.
The streamer supports Tidal Connect, Qobuz Connect, Spotify Connect, TuneIn Radio, and AirPlay 2, all at their highest available quality levels. Full UPnP and DLNA compatibility allows easy access to network storage and third-party control apps. Roon Ready certification ensures flawless integration into advanced digital audio ecosystems.
Advanced Connectivity and Flexible System Integration
The Mission 778S Streamer is designed to be one of the most versatile compact streamers available. Dual-band Wi-Fi and Gigabit Ethernet provide stable and high-speed network access, while USB-C allows direct connection to a PC or Mac. Two USB-A ports enable playback from external storage devices, expanding the system’s flexibility.
For analogue connections, balanced XLR and single-ended RCA outputs are included, ensuring compatibility with a wide range of amplifiers. Digital outputs are equally comprehensive, with coaxial, optical, and USB-A connections for external DACs. A 6.35mm headphone output allows private listening without the need for additional equipment.
This level of connectivity ensures the 778S can function as the digital heart of almost any audio system, whether used as a standalone streamer, a DAC, or a headphone listening solution. Its adaptability makes it equally at home in desktop systems and full-scale hi-fi installations.
High Performance DAC and Audiophile Circuit Design
At the heart of the Mission 778S Streamer lies the ESS Sabre ES9038Q2M, a highly respected 32-bit DAC known for its resolution and dynamic performance. Mission has gone to great lengths to ensure this chip performs at its absolute best.
A carefully designed Class A post DAC filter stage is used to preserve signal purity and unlock the full potential of the DAC’s exceptional signal-to-noise ratio. The signal path is fully isolated from digital interference, while a premium linear power supply with a high-quality toroidal transformer delivers clean and stable power.
Dedicated power rails feed the XMOS processor, the microcontroller, and the DAC itself, each supported by ultra-low noise regulators. Balanced analogue circuitry further reduces noise and distortion, feeding the XLR outputs directly for maximum sonic benefit.
The onboard headphone amplifier uses a fast, high-current design that delivers clarity, dynamics, and control with a wide variety of headphones.
High Resolution Audio and Sonic Customisation
The Mission 778S Streamer supports an extraordinary range of high-resolution formats, handling PCM up to 32-bit and 768 kHz, along with native DSD up to DSD512. Popular formats, including FLAC, ALAC, WAV, AIFF, and APE, are fully supported, alongside DSF and DIFF for native DSD playback and DoP for compatibility with DSD over PCM.
Even compressed formats, such as MP3, WMA, AAC, and OGG, are reproduced with impressive fidelity. PCM streams are automatically upsampled to either 352.8 kHz or 384 kHz before digital-to-analogue conversion, pushing unwanted artefacts beyond the audible range and allowing gentler filtering.
This enhances clarity, transient accuracy, and spatial realism. For listeners who prefer manual control, the upsampling can be disabled and one of five DAC reconstruction filters selected, allowing the sound to be fine-tuned to personal taste and different music sources.
Mission Accomplished with Musical Excellence
The Mission 778S Streamer embodies the brand’s philosophy that music always comes first. Every technical decision is made in service of musical realism, emotional engagement, and long-term listening pleasure. Its sound is fluid, full-bodied, detailed, and dynamically expressive, drawing listeners into the performance rather than impressing with sterile precision.
Compared to entry-level streamers, it offers a clear step forward in refinement and musical authority, yet remains accessible at a sub-one-thousand-pound price point. This makes it an ideal upgrade for anyone seeking higher performance without entering extreme high-end territory.
Available in black or silver, the 778S complements the Mission 778X amplifier perfectly, both visually and sonically. It stands as a complete and mature streaming solution that balances technology, design, and musicality in a way that few compact devices can achieve.
